The Woodhouse Hospital, Cheadle, Staffordshire - Key Staff

Simon Reed - Hospital Manager

Simon Reed, Registered Manager at The Woodhouse, Cheadle, Staffordshire- Specialist Learning Disability Service

"I joined Lighthouse in January 2014 and have been working in the Health/ Social Care sector for around 31 years in both NHS and more recently private sectors.

I am a registered mental health nurse and have a BSC (hons) in Healthcare. I began my nursing career back in 1982 after a friend of mine who was already undertaking a nursing course convinced me that I would really like it and so started my nursing training.

The aspect I really like about my job is being able to make a difference in a positive manner to people’s lives whether that be for our service users, developing staff or the organisation. I also enjoy the challenges of strategically developing an organisation and operationally putting this into practice.

I have only been with Lighthouse a short while I have found them to be a friendly and welcoming organisation. They also have a very positive vision about the future provide high quality services to a range of service user groups.

I get most job satisfaction from working my way through difficult situations and problem solving. I strongly believe that the way to do this is to work collaboratively and build a strong team that works closely together and this has always been one of the values I strive to create in order to get the best out of a group of staff."

Dr Hannah Friend - Consultant Forensic Psychologist

‘I’ve been working as a psychologist for over 13 years. I am a Chartered Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a registered practising Forensic Psychologist with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council). I am an assessor for the Division of Forensic Psychology, stage two training, and on the Editorial Board of the BPS Forensic Update journal. I am also a Visiting Professional Fellow at Birmingham City University.

I have experience working with high risk, challenging individuals including those with learning disabilities, personality disorders and a variety of co-morbid conditions. I am passionate about working with individuals to address maladaptive thinking and behaviour that prevents them living within the community without difficulty or has led them towards anti-social behaviour and crime. I’m currently actively engaged in research on sex offenders, Relating theory and victim choice, which will hopefully better inform how we work with this population.

I have only been working at Lighthouse Healthcare a short amount of time but there is a real team effort here to working with challenging and complex individuals and it’s a really positive working environment. I see my role as helping individuals to enrich their lives by supporting them to reach their potential and also supporting  colleagues in delivering a quality service."

Dr Huck Bijral - Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Huck Bijral

"I obtained my medical degree from the University of Manchester in 1997 having previously studying for a BSc (Medical Science) at the University of St. Andrews.

I had a lifelong ambition to follow in my father’s footsteps and go into General Practice and the earliest part of my time in medicine was spent on a GP training scheme.  However, after a clinical post in Psychiatry in 1999, my career path changed; I found in Psychiatry a level of job satisfaction and enjoyment which made the decision, to leave GP training behind, surprisingly straightforward. I became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2004 and took up my first consultant post, in adult community and inpatient psychiatry, in 2007. I joined the Independent sector in 2013 and looked after patients with personality disorders in a medium secure setting. I also looked after patients presenting with other mental health issues, including  intellectual disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Conditions, in a low secure setting.

I joined the Autism Service, at The Woodhouse Hospital, in May 2016. I have seen the huge strides so many of those in our care have made, during their time with us.  I have found a level of dedication amongst the staff which is deeply impressive and this has clearly helped so many of our patients make this very positive progress. I strongly believe that families and carers are proactively given every opportunity to be involved in the care and treatment of loved ones, along their pathway of recovery. It is very gratifying to see our patients do so well, with the right approach and treatment, and it is humbling to be able to play a small role in their stories of success."

Dr Bhuanumurthy Venkataramaiah - Consultant Psychiatrist

“My interest in the health and social care profession began from a young age when I was always gentle and sensitive to the needs of my family members, neighbours and significant others. My personal attributes were well recognised and rewarded by both my parents and teachers from early on in my life, and I feel I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to develop my passion in understanding the human body and different organ systems.

I qualified as a Doctor in 1988, and completed higher Post Graduate training in internal medicine and then practised as a Physician with special interests in diabetes and endocrinology. I have always had a passion to further explore neurosciences and dealing with human emotions which led to me completing a Post Graduate course in the field of Psychiatry and its allied specialities.

I have been practicing as a Clinician with expertise in Psychiatry and medicine for 24 years and over this time have acquired vast knowledge and rich experiences to draw from. I like a challenge and firmly believe in lifelong learning and a holistic approach to care.

I am proud to be working as part of a very skilled and friendly multidisciplinary team here at The Woodhouse, addressing the health and care needs of diverse and challenging patient groups together.”
