Phoenix House Private Mental Health Hospital for men, in Welshpool, Powys: Key Staff
Yvonne Williams - Hospital Manager
"I knew from very early on that I wanted to work in forensic science and anything to do with understanding why people offend, or what happens in the human mind to commit crimes. I looked into joining forensic psychology but compared to the length of degree compared to Nursing, I decided to go with the Mental Health Nursing as it allowed me to explore people’s minds and enabled me to understand and manage their behaviour including hand’s on work.
In 1998 I joined a Nursing course at university and in 2001 my career in healthcare began after I qualified as an RMN and commenced working in a medium and low secure setting with patients with mental health and offending histories. In this setting I worked with patients who had varying diagnosis and presentations including generic mental health conditions to complex dual diagnosis. I worked in all wards which were remand, forensics additions, personality disorder, dual diagnosis learning disabilities and mental health, and women’s specialist services.
I have experience of working in prison settings, young offender institutes and also working within Recovery Homes. I also have considerable experience in specialist female wards with patients who present with challenging behaviours, suffered domestic violence, forensic additions unit, remand/ court assessment unit, low security and rehabilitation wards.
Over the years I have also gained qualifications in Managing staff, Recruitment, Training for Excellency course, Motivational interviewing, Supervision and Appraisals, Forensic Interventions in Mental Health Nursing.
I get job satisfaction when I see patients having the best care possible and having a positive recovery. Supporting my team to be the best and to be able to deliver high quality care is very important to me. As an individual, my goals are to be supportive to all those that work with me, empowering them to develop professionally and personally. In the past l have also been involved in training committees and have delivered training to nursing teams which equipped them to deliver and implement required standards of care.
I recently joined the team at Phoenix House as the Hospital manager and have felt most welcomed by the staff team and management. Although I have been here only a short time, I have been supported in depth to enable me to do my job effectively.""
Dr Amrit Singh - Consultant Psychiatrist & Responsible Officer
“I have been working at the Phoenix House Hospital since 2008 and have many years’ experience in the healthcare industry since graduating in the Medical field in 1976.
Initially I wanted a career in agriculture but as things happen in life I ended up working in medicine and I have no regrets! I have a B.SC (Zoology, Botany and Chemistry) , M.B.B.S – D.P.M. (Diploma in Psychological Medicine)1980, MRCPsych ( 1982) and F.R.C.Psych.
Lighthouse Healthcare provides a service that is otherwise not available by bringing together expertise that benefits the patient and offers hope to both them as individuals and their families. At Phoenix House, the combined service and therapy available helps to reconstruct people’s lives.
I find it very rewarding when a distressed and unwell person recovers or has learnt to live in a positive way, and when people reach their full potential despite the problems of mental disorder.
I get great satisfaction when I can bring in a little bit of my expertise and work with a skilled team at Phoenix House to be a part of a patient’s journey to recovery.”
