Case Studies of Service Users at Phoenix House Men's Mental Health Hospital in Welshpool
Residents at Phoenix House Men's Mental Health Hospital share their experiences of being a service user and their journeys to recovery.
My Experience - Alexander, Phoenix House
"I came to Phoenix House three months ago from another hospital. When I first arrived I was put onto constant observation but after a few days the staff were happy with how I was settling in and I was taken off this. I have a key worker called Jackie who is my main nurse in the hospital, along with Support Worker Kim who is also there for me. This works really well as it means I always have somebody to talk to. I don’t see Phoenix House as a hospital it feels more like a care home because it’s quite open. Staying at Phoenix House is really helping me with my ADHD and taking my medication. I never thought I’d be at the stage I am now after only three months.
I am looking at starting a college course in September at a local college, where I am hoping to do my MPTC Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies which is a three in one course where I will learn about agriculture, horticulture and animal care. The main reason I am doing this course is to enable me to go on and do my level one in Animal Care. This will help me with my future career as I would like to be an Animal Care Assistant. When I mentioned about wanting to do a college course to my key worker Jackie she encouraged me to find out more details and has been really supportive.
I am in charge of when I will eventually leave Phoenix House and I need to behave and take my medication to help me recover. Ultimately when I leave I want to get my own flat, get a girlfriend and a good job working with animals and then eventually have a family of my own."
