Lighthouse Healthcare Annual Educational Conferences

Each year we host a CPD Certified educational conference where we invite a number of external delegates and our internal staff to hear keynote speakers talk about key topics within the areas of Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism. CPD certified educational conference's hosted by Lighthouse Healthcare- Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, Autism and Complex Needs

Last year’s CPD Certified conference was entitled Transforming Care for Individuals with Learning Disability and Complex needs and focused on a number of topics surrounding the Transforming Care Agenda following Winterborne View in 2011.

Well attended by over 80 delegates the audience benefitted from the knowledge and experiences shared by our speakers on the day.

Topics and speakers on the day were:

Bill Fox, founder and Executive Chairman of Maybo explored the key ingredients for creating positive and safe environments, which are the foundations for quality of life- and work. View Bill’s presentation here

Derek and Edna Thomas were the first of two parent speakers who shared very personal experiences from a parent’s perspective of the complex care system.

Professor Leam Craig, Consultant Forensic & Clinical Psychologist spoke about working with sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities and the research he has done around sexual and violent offenders with learning disability. Read Professor Craig’s presentation

Deacon Jane Gibson is a Minister in a small Lancashire village and she shared her experiences with the room about being a mother to two children with complex needs.

Dr Rebecca Fish a research at Lancaster University presented to delegates the findings of her recently completed PhD which explored the experiences of women who use low and medium secure learning disability services in the North of England using an ethnographic approach. Robin Colley, Assistant Psychologist at Lighthouse Healthcare presented a case study of a client he worked with at Healthlinc House our learning disability hospital service in Lincolnshire. Robin spoke about the benefits of bespoke care in a single occupancy environment for ‘Emma’ in our award winning High Intensity Service, her background, diagnosis, treatment plan and the successful outcomes that have been achieved as a result of a person centred with a structured, clear and consistent approach. Read more about our bespoke care solutions and ‘Emma’s’ positive outcomes here

Dr Steve Hinder a consultant psychiatrist for people with intellectual disability who works for Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, focused on the complex relationship between learning disability and severe autism and challenged the diagnostic process asking delegates to think outside the box around their existing thoughts on learning disability and autism. He challenged delegates to not accept “challenging behaviour” as a diagnosis in their clients and also put forward some thought provoking opinions on focusing on the specialist needs of the autistic majority in our services and reframing challenging behaviour in developing more appropriate solutions and support for clients. Below are links to the presentations we have delivered.

The Autism Show 2015

For the third consecutive year we took a speaker slot in the Hub Theatre 2 at the Autism Show in Manchester as part of our support for the event. Our Senior Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Therapist delivered a presentation entitled “Moving forward… Building positive relationships through communication and occupation”

The talk focused on the challenges people with Autism face and how to promote positive relationship building through environment, family, staff and peers. They also discussed the introduction of Lego Therapy which is a weekly group aimed at patients with mixed abilities to build Lego structures. The Lego Therapy sessions aim to improve motivation to initiate social contact with peers and improve the ability to sustain interaction with peers.

“Moving forward…Combining Sensory and Communication Intervention into Rehabilitation” was a presentation by Karen Retford, Occupational Therapist and Fiona Brettell, Speech & Language Therapist.  Karen and Fiona both work at The Woodhouse Hospital in Cheadle, Staffordshire.  Their presentation at this year's show was based around a case study of a male patient at The Woodhouse Hospital who has specific needs related to his Autism and how they have worked with him and the multi-disciplinary team to achieve some positives outcomes.

The Autism Show 2013

“Positive Predictability & Effective Motivation” is a presentation by John Simpson. John has Asperger’s himself and spoke for us about the intense, at times obsessional interests that people with autism have, how to identify them and use them as a positive facilitator to improve behaviour and achievement.
