Mandy Leadbetter- Registered Hospital Manager

Mandy Leadbetter- Manager, Ballington House, Leek, Staffordshire- Female Mental Health Service

"My interest in Health and Social care began at home where I cared for my parents who were in the later stages of their lives. I found a purpose and meaning to my life which inspired me to begin a career in care. I started working in the residential sector and supported individuals with learning disabilities; from there the team encouraged me to complete educational courses to enable me to enrol at Keele University for the Mental Health Nursing course. The three years went by quickly and I gained a wealth of knowledge in many areas of mental health settings and I particularly enjoyed working in the acute areas.

After qualifying I went to work in a nursing home to get further experience in dementia and palliative care; this role gave me great sense of satisfaction.

In 2007 I joined Lighthouse Healthcare and worked with the nursing team at The Woodhouse Hospital on a mixed ward. During my time at The Woodhouse I gained valuable experience working with individuals with learning disabilities with very complex needs. I worked hard and progressed to the role of ward manager of the newly developed low secure unit. I then spent time working on the female unit enabling me to learn more about gender specific units and the complexities of women in services. Lighthouse then developed the Ballington House rehabilitation service for females and I was offered the Deputy Manager post. I helped to shape and develop the service which gained an excellent reputation for managing the more complex ladies within the community.

After a short break in 2013 to pursue other ventures overseas I returned to the UK and based myself in Liverpool. I then worked for a larger organisation as the ward manager for a unit specifically for females with a diagnosis of personality disorders/complex needs; this again was a newly developed service. I developed and enhanced my skills in assessment and treatment of females who were more challenging. I gained experience of joint working with the NHS and enhanced my knowledge of how beds are commissioned and patient’s pathways are developed.

In March 2014 I returned to Ballington House as the Hospital Manager. Working for Lighthouse Healthcare is great because as a manager within a smaller company you can really be a part of any changes made. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with the team to help them develop and lead by example. This shows as together Ballington is growing from strength to strength.

After all these years I am still as passionate and enthusiastic about nursing as I was when I started. I enjoy putting a smile on somebody’s face and I come to work to make a difference."

Catherine Harris-  Deputy Hospital Manager

Catherine Harris, Deputy Manager- Ballington House, Leek , Staffordshire- Specialist Female Mental Health Hospital Service

"Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be in the health profession and have always had a keen passion for caring for and helping others. I initially studied health and social care at college, and during the course, undertook some work experience in a special needs school which I found extremely rewarding. I soon realised I wanted to work within that field which prompted me to apply for university where I subsequently qualified as a learning disability nurse in 2008.

I have worked at Lighthouse Healthcare for around eight years, in total. This has been within three different roles between two of their services. I initially began in Lighthouse’s learning disability services as a staff nurse when newly qualified, before having the opportunity to act up as a charge nurse. More latterly and currently, I am the deputy manager of Ballington House, one of Lighthouse’s female mental health services. Since being here, I have developed a keen interest in mental health, the process of recovery and all the different aspects involved within that. I love working closely with others and get satisfaction from seeing people make positive steps towards taking control and regaining a meaningful life."
